Why We Founded the AfroLatinidades Institute & What We Hope to Accomplish

In their 1987 magnum opus, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Tejana lesbian and working-class author Gloria Anzaldúa observes that within the varied and expansive nomenclature that Chicanx people use to self-identify, “we hardly ever own our Black ancestry” (85). It has taken a quarter century for Chicanx cultural workers, critics, scholars, and activists to take up Anzaldúa’s implicit challenge to recover the Black roots of mestizaje. More…
